소프트웨어 RAID는 윈도우 NT 4.0부터 들어 있는 기능이다. 최근에는 하드웨어 RAID 보드도 1만 엔 정도로 살 수 있지만,
어쨌든 주변에 쓰지 않는 HDD가 굴러다니는 사람은 윈도우 2000에서 써보자.
RAID라는 것은 HDD를 2대 이상 연결하여 액세스
속도를 높이거나 신뢰성을 높이거나 하는 구조다. 크게 나누면 하드웨어를 쓰는 것과 소프트웨어로 쓰는 것 두 가지가 있다.
방식도 7종류 정도여서 잘 쓰는 것은 RAID 0, RAID 1,RAID0+1, RAID5 정도다.
윈도우 2000은 RAID 0(스트라이핑)이나
RAID1(미러링)이 이루어진다. RAID0은 HDD 2대를 교대로 액세스하여 한쪽의 데이터를 읽으려고 기다리는 시간에
다른 쪽의 데이터를 처리하여 액세스 속도를 올리는 것을 할 수 있다. RAID 1은 2대의 디스크에 같은 내용을 써넣어
물리적으로 HDD가 고장났을 때 백업을 자동으로 만든다.
이번에는 스트라이핑 디스크를 만들어 보았다. HDD는 SCSI와 IDE가 섞여 있어도 괜찮다.
'제어판' → '관리 툴' → '컴퓨터 관리' → '디스크 관리'에 이르러 드라이브 영역이 빈 상태의 디스크가 2대 있으면 된다.
여기서 표시되는 디스크 영역을 마우스 오른쪽 버튼을 누르면 볼륨을 만들 수 있다. 이 때 보통의 드라이브는 '업그레이드'
를 추천한다. DOS 등에서 쓰는 드라이브는 '베이직 드라이브'라는 표시가 되어 있지만 업그레이드하면 '다이내믹 드라이브'
라는 이름이 된다. 이 다이내믹 드라이브가 2개 이상 있으면 볼륨을 만들 때 심플 볼륨, 스팬볼륨, 스트라이브 볼륨,
미러 볼륨, RAID-5볼륨(3대 이상 있을 때) 중 하나를 만들 수 있다. 여기서 만들고 싶은 드라이브 타입을 정하면 된다.
포맷이 되고 두 개의 드라이브는 하나의 드라이브로 액세스할 수 있다.
스트라이프 볼륨의 용량은 2개의 볼륨을 합친 양이 되고 미러 볼륨은 1대분이 된다. 이 방법으로 스트라이프 볼륨을 만들어 보았다.
HD Bench 2.61을 걸어 보면 PIO-4의 단일 드라이브로 읽고 쓰기 4000 정도, DMA-2(Ultra DMA 33)의 드라이브에서
8000 정도, SCSI디스크에서 10000이상이었던 벤치마크 값이 Ultra DMA 33의 스트라이프 볼륨에서 읽기 22000/쓰기 18000
정도가 되어 2배 이상의 성능 향상을 볼 수 있었다.

하지만 프로 버전에서는 미러링 추가 메뉴가 비활성화 되어 있다.
서버 버전에서만 지원 되는 기능인가보다..

I attempted this on .NET Server and have sucessfully converted Build 3615 to Windows XP Professional. Using an app called NTSwitch, .NET now thinks it is a workstation OS , in this case , Windows XP Pro. All of the features of XP that were disabled, such as fast user switching , the welcome screen , and DirectX now work perfectly. I have personally always got much better performance out of .NET than I have out of Windows XP. This program works by changing certain entries in the system registry to trick Windows into thinking it is a workstation OS. Once you run this program , you can reboot , enable fast user switching and the welcome screen from Group Policy Editer, gpedit.msc from the run command , your boot logo will be changed to that of XP Pro and many other things. This can also be done on Windows XP Pro (thanks to NeoLojik for the testing, the app says it does not work but it will). He gained an extreme amount of performance. What we basically end up with here is this. .NET contains patches and bug fixes for Windows XP that you likely won't see until SP1 , but you are getting them in this way. And there is no draw back. Each and every feature of XP is there, you just have to enable some things on after running this program. For example. Norton Antivirus 2002 would not install on 3615 as it is not compatible with a "Server OS" , however , after running this program , Norton installs perfectly fine on my system. Upon further testing, we have determined that this does cause a nasty memory leak when taking XP Pro Workstation to XP Pro Server. Convert this OS at your own risk , however all other NT OS's are fine.

Another update, a friend of mine, Sidewinder, who originally pointed this app out to me, just was able to install XP Plus on Windows .NET 3590 as well as Partition Magic 7.
